It joins a growing slate of acclaimed Apple TV sci-fi titles, including Severance, Foundation, Invasion and the recently record-breaking Pluribus from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan.

Murderbot follows a security robot that hacks its own governing software to gain free will, then hides this from the humans it is contracted to protect while quietly working through soap operas in its downtime. The show is based on a series of award-winning science fiction novellas by Martha Wells, and stars Alexander Skarsgård as the title character. Its first season aired in full across the first half of 2025.

Apple TV has built up a reputation for well-regarded science fiction shows, with Murderbot sitting alongside titles such as Severance, Foundation and Pluribus. A second season of Murderbot has been in the works, though details had been scarce for some months, making this the first substantial update on the show's progress since renewal.

The current news centres on casting: a large group of actors has been confirmed to join the second season, adding to the show's profile ahead of a return that does not yet have a confirmed release date.
