Australian MP loses both legs after alleged car attack
Independent Australian MP Helen Haines has lost both legs after being hit by a car in what police allege was a deliberate attack. Her husband said she was alive and in good spirits mentally, but faces a long and difficult recovery.
Brendan Nugent, 43, has been charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and harming a Commonwealth public official; police say further charges, possibly including attempted murder, may follow. He appeared in court on Wednesday and is due back in February. Investigators have not established a motive and are examining possible drug or medication use and whether the two had a personal connection.
