On-prem AI and HPC server revenue rose 20% as prices surged
On-premises high-performance computing and AI server revenue rose sharply in the first half of 2026, reflecting continued demand from organisations that want to run advanced computing in-house. The figures matter because they show AI investment lifting the market, while higher prices account for much more of the growth than an increase in the number of systems sold.
Hyperion Research estimates revenue reached $16.5 billion, up 19.9 per cent year on year, while unit shipments grew 4.4 per cent. It links the price rise to costly GPUs and other accelerators, as well as memory costs that have tripled or quadrupled since last year. Dell led vendors with $4.2 billion in revenue and a 24 per cent market share, ahead of HPE at 21 per cent; the market remains cyclical, with large supercomputer purchases varying from year to year.
In short
- On-prem HPC and AI server revenue reached $16.5 billion in the first half of 2026.
- Revenue rose far faster than shipments, as system prices increased.
- Dell moved ahead of HPE in the vendor rankings.
