The unidentified voice responded each time Cruz named a Democrat he was criticising: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed and Texas Senate nominee James Talarico. The outburst came during the same hour that attendees honoured Kirk, who was killed at Utah Valley University the previous September, with President Donald Trump and Turning Point USA's Lucas Miles both paying tribute to him. The convention, also addressed by Vice President JD Vance and various Senate candidates and cabinet secretaries, took place as the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approached and amid predictions that Democrats could retake the House while Senate control remains contested in states including Maine, Ohio, Michigan and Alaska.
