Trading Standards warns AI is making fraud harder to spot
National Trading Standards has issued its first AI scam watchlist as criminals use artificial intelligence to make fraud more convincing and easier to scale. The warning matters because familiar clues, such as spelling mistakes, may no longer help people identify scams.
The watchlist highlights fake retailer websites, AI-assisted romance scams, deepfake videos and cloned voices used to impersonate relatives, as well as polished phishing messages. Trading standards advises checking businesses and addresses, verifying financial firms, and pausing before sending money or sharing information, especially when someone creates urgency. People can report fraud to Report Fraud or seek advice from Citizens Advice.

- Spelling mistakes are no longer a reliable warning sign.
