A college lecturer has pleaded guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh to killing a husband and wife in a drink-drive crash following a Christmas night out, in a case highlighting the devastating consequences of drink-driving. Sophie Hynd, 33, from Kirkcaldy, admitted causing the deaths of Jatinder Kaur, 48, and her husband Satwant Singh, 64, by driving dangerously while impaired by alcohol, as well as causing severe injury to a ten-year-old boy who was also in the car.

The crash happened on 19 December 2025 on the B981 near Cluny, after Hynd had been drinking prosecco, spirits and shots since 1.30pm following the last day of term at Fife College. Around 10.57pm she crossed onto the opposing carriageway on a bend and collided head-on with the family's Volkswagen Polo; a motorist had already called 999 minutes earlier after witnessing her swerving and tailgating. Mrs Kaur died at the scene and Mr Singh died in hospital two days later, while the boy suffered internal injuries and a broken leg. Hynd was remanded in custody by Judge Michael O'Grady, KC, ahead of sentencing next month.
