Emmys Slice Key Writing, Directing, And Acting Categories From Primetime Show But Will The Guilds Agree? – Notes On The Season
The Television Academy's Board of Governors has voted to remove several major categories from the 2026 Primetime Emmy telecast, moving them instead to the earlier Creative Arts ceremonies. For the first time, this includes key Limited Series/Anthology/TV Movie categories such as Supporting Actor and Actress, Writing and Directing, alongside Writing for a Variety Series, a decision that has provoked strong pushback from industry guilds who argue it diminishes recognition for creative talent.
The changes will cut the number of categories shown on the main broadcast to just 19, apparently to allow more room for entertainment segments, similar to the approach taken by the Grammys. The Primetime Emmys air on NBC on Monday 14 September, with the Creative Arts ceremonies held the preceding weekend of 5-6 September. The DGA, WGA and SAG-AFTRA issued a joint statement calling the move a devaluation of the contributions of the people the Emmys are meant to honour, echoing similar disputes in 2020 and 2024, the latter of which was reversed after WGA pressure when the show aired on Fox.
