Enduring memories and ‘imposter syndrome’ – The GAA Social meets Mayo star Carney

BBC Sport ·

Mayo midfielder Jack Carney says two moments from the celebrations after the county’s first All-Ireland title in 75 years will stay with him: the homecoming at his club, Kilmeena, and taking the Sam Maguire Cup to Achill Island. The memories reflect the strong community and family ties behind his success, as well as the wider significance of Mayo’s victory.

Carney recalls the crowd that waited at Kilmeena to welcome the team, and the island procession across the Michael Davitt Bridge, accompanied by more than 100 bagpipers, including his father. His father and grandfather are from Achill, where his grandfather served as a sergeant, and Carney said the trophy’s arrival carried cultural importance. He made his Mayo debut in 2021, scored two two-pointers in the final against Kerry, and was nominated for Footballer of the Year after becoming a key player under manager Andy Moran.
