English National Ballet’s “Rhythm Riot” is an eclectic triple bill at Sadler’s Wells, combining Balanchine’s tribute to Stravinsky with two new works influenced by tap, jazz, hip-hop, Korean drumming and William Blake. The production’s emphasis on rhythm delivers energetic, highly accomplished performances, while its contrasting moods range from exuberant showmanship to menace, disillusionment and gothic unease.

Balanchine’s “Symphony in Three Movements” is performed with clarity and vigour, supported by the English National Ballet Philharmonic. Micaela Taylor’s “Bow Out”, inspired by the Nicholas Brothers, blends classical and popular dance with virtuosity and darker undertones, while Jae Man Joo’s “Auguries of Innocence” creates an immersive, bleak world through massed movement, distressed designs and atmospheric music. The production runs at Sadler’s Wells until 3 October.
