The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating a breach of its jobs portal (FBIjobs.gov), which was taken offline on Tuesday and remained non-operational as of Wednesday morning. Criminal hacking group ShinyHunters has claimed responsibility for the attack and stated it has stolen personal data belonging to nearly all FBI agents and job applicants. The breach is significant because it has compromised sensitive information held by the nation's premier federal law enforcement agency and affects current and prospective employees.

The stolen data includes agents' names, home addresses, Social Security numbers, work assignments and, in some cases, the names of family members. ShinyHunters stated the attack was retaliation for an FBI public service announcement issued in May 2026 that warned organisations about the group's extortion tactics and advised against paying ransom demands. ShinyHunters is a established criminal group active since at least 2019 that has previously targeted high-profile organisations including Rockstar Games, the Canvas learning platform, Microsoft, AT&T, Ticketmaster and multiple universities.
