Forward-deployed engineers are the AI industry’s latest talent obsession

TechCrunch · 3 hours ago

Forward-deployed engineers are becoming a highly sought-after AI specialism as companies shift from experimenting with models to proving that AI investments improve profits. These engineers work inside client organisations to build and deploy AI systems, and their scarcity could determine which businesses achieve meaningful returns.

Executive search firm Christian & Timbers estimates that only around 2,000 US engineers combine the industry expertise and applied-AI experience needed to deliver consistent results, despite roughly 17,000 FDEs being on the market. Its research projects demand to rise by 2,100% by year-end: the share of firms planning FDE hires reportedly increased from 5–10% early in 2026 to 70% by the end of the second quarter, with large consultancies seeking teams of 20 to 100.

  • Companies need FDEs to turn AI spending into measurable value.
  • Demand is rising far faster than the supply of elite specialists.
  • Firms face growing pressure to demonstrate AI returns.
