Ghost’s Tobias Forge brings his long-lost death metal band Repugnant back from the dead

Louder ·

Ghost mastermind Tobias Forge has resurrected his early-2000s death metal band Repugnant, releasing their first new material in over two decades. The band has created a video for their 2004 song Premature Burial, which features in V/H/S Mixtape, the latest entry in the long-running horror anthology franchise. The new version sees Watain's Erik Danielsson providing vocals, replacing Forge on microphone duties for this rendition.

The reunion brings together several musicians from Repugnant's previous incarnations, including bassist Gustaf Lindström (who also played in early Ghost), drummer Thomas Daun and guitarist Gottfrid Åhman. The move comes as Ghost enters a hiatus period, with reports suggesting Forge is developing a separate death metal project. Earache Records boss Digby Pearson has indicated the label has signed a "connected-to-Ghost death metal band", confirming Forge's focus on heavier material.

Tobias Forge is a Swedish musician best known for leading Ghost, a rock band that has achieved international success over the past decade. Ghost combines heavy instrumentation with theatrical presentation and has developed a substantial following around the world.

Before Ghost, Forge was a member of Repugnant, a death metal band from the early 2000s. Death metal is a heavier and more extreme subgenre of metal music compared to Ghost's rock style. After some years of activity, Repugnant became inactive.

The revival of Repugnant is worth noting because Forge is a prominent figure in modern metal and rock music through his work with Ghost. Ghost is currently on hiatus, which has given Forge the opportunity to revisit musical projects from his earlier career.
