Golden Globes: ‘Artificial’ Submitted As Comedy (Exclusive)

The Hollywood Reporter ·

Neon has submitted Luca Guadagnino’s film *Artificial* in the Golden Globes musical or comedy categories, settling a closely watched awards-season classification question. The decision puts the film in different best picture and best actor races from those it would face as a drama, despite its serious subject of artificial intelligence’s rise and risks.

The comedy case rests partly on the screenplay by humour writer Simon Rich and scenes that have drawn laughter at screenings. Yura Borisov, who plays Ilya Sutskever, will compete in the comedy actor category; Andrew Garfield, as Sam Altman, and Monica Barbaro, as Mira Murati, are entered in supporting actor and actress races. The film premiered at the New York Film Festival on 5 October, and the 84th Golden Globes are scheduled for 10 January 2027.

In short

  • *Artificial* will compete as a musical or comedy.
  • Yura Borisov enters the comedy actor race.
  • The Golden Globes take place on 10 January 2027.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

The musical or comedy classification has a good-faith basis in Simon Rich’s humour-led screenplay and scenes that have made audiences laugh. The Globes’ categories can reflect a film’s tone and performance style as well as its serious subject, and this placement gives the film a chance to compete among works with a similar comic character.

The case against

The film’s central subject is the rise of artificial intelligence and the risks it may pose, which could make drama a more fitting category for its overall themes and tone. Category placement also affects which films and actors it competes against, so a comedy entry may be questioned if viewers feel the humour is secondary to the serious story.

Explained simply

The Golden Globes divide many film awards into musical or comedy and drama categories. Studios submit films to a category, which determines which other films and performers they compete against.

Artificial is directed by Luca Guadagnino and centres on the rise of artificial intelligence and the people involved in it. Its screenplay is by Simon Rich, whose work includes comedy, and some scenes have reportedly made audiences laugh.

The film features Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever, Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman and Monica Barbaro as Mira Murati. Its category affects which Golden Globe picture and acting races they enter.
