Harvey Weinstein has described his decision not to pay $750,000 to settle Miriam Haley’s sexual assault claim as the “stupidest mistake” he made. Speaking in his only interview since receiving a prison sentence, he said he regretted the decision and not testifying in his defence, while continuing to insist he would appeal and eventually be free.
Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting Haley at his New York apartment in 2006, followed by five years of supervised release; prosecutors had sought 20 years. Haley, now 49, told the court the assault had affected her for two decades and felt like a “life sentence”. Weinstein also compared his decision not to testify with Johnny Depp’s defamation case and said women had been attracted to his power.
