Australians urged to compare super balances with age-based averages

Daily Mail · 49 minutes ago

Australians are being encouraged to compare their superannuation savings with age-based averages as many may not be on track for a comfortable retirement. Data from the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia, published by Rest Super, shows balances generally rise with age but are consistently higher for men than women.

Average balances range from $140,680 for men aged 40–44 and $109,209 for women to $448,518 and $392,274 respectively for those aged 65–69. ASFA estimates that a comfortable retirement requires annual income of $55,923 for a single homeowner or $78,566 for a homeowner couple, while modest retirement figures are $36,434 and $52,473. Rest Super suggests considering additional contributions, reviewing fees and performance, and consolidating accounts cautiously, while stressing that the figures are general benchmarks and financial advice may be appropriate.

  • Super balances generally increase with age but vary by gender.
  • Comfortable retirement costs up to $78,566 annually for homeowner couples.
  • Extra contributions and fee reviews may improve long-term outcomes.
