Hyper Light Drifter Creator Says Studio’s Fate Is Still Uncertain
Heart Machine, the studio behind Hyper Light Drifter, has an uncertain future after laying off nearly all its staff when a publisher withdrew from an unannounced project. Founder Alx Preston says he is still trying to work out how the studio can survive, amid tight funding and wider instability across the games industry.
Preston said any future for Heart Machine would likely involve smaller games, shorter development cycles and a different way of running the studio. The studio’s 2016 debut received strong reviews, but later projects did not reach the same heights; Hyper Light Breaker’s full release was cancelled in 2025 after layoffs. Preston said he does not want the team spending more than three years on a project, citing the risk of burnout.
