Indie Distributor Bleecker Street Sold to Firm Backed By Billionaire Pierre Omidyar

The Hollywood Reporter ·

Film distributor Bleecker Street is being acquired by Outerlight Entertainment, a company backed by billionaire Pierre Omidyar. The deal will provide capital for Bleecker to continue its film business and expand its event label, Crosswalk, while keeping its current leaders and operating independently within Outerlight’s portfolio.

CEO Kent Sanderson and president and chief marketing officer Tyler DiNapoli will remain in place. Outerlight also owns Topic Studios and Puzzle Pictures, but Topic will continue selling its projects to distributors on the open market, with no deal linking it to Bleecker. Bleecker’s recent and upcoming releases include the comedy *Stop! That! Train!*, thriller *Victorian Psycho* and drama *The Liberation*; its documentary *Musk* is currently in cinemas and expanding its release.

  • Pierre Omidyar-backed Outerlight is acquiring Bleecker Street.
  • Bleecker’s leadership and independent operation will continue.
  • New funding will support its film business and Crosswalk events.

New here? Start with this

Film distributors bring films to cinemas and audiences by arranging releases and promotion. Bleecker Street is an independent US distributor that releases films across a range of genres.

Outerlight Entertainment is a film and television company backed by Pierre Omidyar, who made his fortune founding eBay. It also owns Topic Studios and Puzzle Pictures, which produce film and television projects.

The ownership matters because investment can give a distributor more resources to release films and develop other ventures. Bleecker Street’s leaders are due to stay in place, and the company is expected to operate independently within Outerlight.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

The acquisition could give Bleecker Street the financial backing to keep distributing films and grow its event label, while retaining its existing leadership and independent operations. Supporters may see the investment as a way to sustain a distinctive distributor and bring more films to audiences, with Topic Studios’ projects still available to other distributors.

The case against

A sale to a company backed by a billionaire could raise concerns about how ownership and access to capital may shape which films are supported and how they are marketed, even if Bleecker initially operates independently. Critics may also worry that consolidating film businesses under one owner could narrow the range of independent voices over time, or make Bleecker’s autonomy vulnerable to future changes in strategy.
