Jon Ossoff wins Georgia Senate race over Republican Mike Collins
Jon Ossoff has won re-election to the US Senate in Georgia, defeating Republican challenger Mike Collins. He made the race a judgement on the Trump administration, criticising alleged corruption and arguing that the Iran war and trade policies were affecting voters’ finances.
Ossoff raised at least $115.9m for the election cycle, far more than Collins, and had led him in polls throughout the campaign. Collins focused on immigration enforcement and anti-transgender policies, while his campaign was damaged by reports linking staff and associates to white nationalists and neo-Nazis. Ossoff said the result showed a desire for political reform and called for action on problems including healthcare costs and technology’s disruption.
In short
- Jon Ossoff has been re-elected in Georgia.
- He defeated Republican Mike Collins.
- The campaign centred on Trump, the economy and reported extremist ties.
