Port of Ness is a fishing harbour on the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides off Scotland’s west coast. Fishing vessels work in waters that can become difficult quickly when strong winds and rough seas arrive.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency coordinates searches and rescues at sea, working with the coastguard, lifeboat crews, police and aircraft. Police Scotland may help establish what happened and formally identify anyone recovered.

The Western Isles are exposed to Atlantic weather, and strong gusts can make search operations more challenging. The missing crew’s families are receiving support while the search continues.
