A Maryland hunter fatally shot a woman in Delaware on Friday evening after mistaking her for a deer. Santos Maria Chilel Soto, 39, was killed whilst walking through an open field with a man and two children near Ellendale when hunter Walter Moorhead, 74, fired his rifle from a ground blind—a camouflaged hunting shelter. The incident highlights the serious risks of hunting accidents and the tragic consequences of mistaken identification.

Moorhead was arrested and charged with manslaughter, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, and three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment. He posted a $43,000 cash bond and was released from custody. Soto, described as a beloved mother of five children and aunt, was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help her family cover funeral expenses and the costs of repatriating her body to Guatemala, having raised approximately $12,000 by Monday evening.
