Former Guns N' Roses drummer Matt Sorum has said he had no advance knowledge of the band's 2016 reunion, in which guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan rejoined singer Axl Rose after years apart. Speaking to Detroit radio station WRIF, Sorum said he wasn't surprised the reunion eventually happened but was not informed when it did, adding that the trio "did it the way they wanted to" and have continued on that path since.

Sorum, 65, also reflected on his current outlook, saying he values the freedom to choose his own projects and credits sobriety, of 18 years, and fatherhood to a five-year-old daughter with his sense of gratitude. He further discussed the pressures large bands face once they achieve major success, citing Metallica and The Rolling Stones as examples of groups that have successfully managed internal business and personal dynamics, arguing that money and ego, rather than musical differences, are typically what causes bands to break up.
