Meet the lazy woke NYC lawmaker who missed more than a quarter of council meetings and who wants to hobble the NYPD
Brooklyn council member Chi Ossé has missed four of 18 New York City Council legislative meetings without an excuse, the poorest attendance record among the 51 members this session, according to a New York Post report. The attendance figure has become part of a dispute over his campaign to restrict the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group, which is deployed at protests and other large gatherings.
Ossé sponsors the CURB Act, which would bar the unit from policing demonstrations and limit crowd-control tactics. He has accused Public Safety Committee chair Oswald Feliz of blocking a hearing; Feliz responded by criticising Ossé’s attendance and accusing him of prioritising social media. One absence was on 24 September, when Ossé and another progressive council member skipped a meeting to protest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s UN appearance. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has also pledged to disband the unit, which has faced criticism over its handling of protests.
