Ella Rubin is nearing the end of filming The God of the Woods, a Netflix mystery series adapted from Liz Moore’s bestselling novel and co-starring Maya Hawke. Rubin said the 1970s-set atmospheric thriller gives her a markedly different and more challenging role, centred on a troubled young woman with a dark past and morally ambiguous choices.

The story concerns the disappearance of 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar from her family’s summer camp, exposing secrets within the Van Laar family. Rubin said she had one week of production remaining and praised the cast, which includes Hawke, Kerry Condon, Tracy Letts, Benjamin Walker, Nell Fisher, Autumn Molina and Susannah Perkins.
