Nine-year-old runs up $118,000 bill on dad’s corporate credit card advertising his Roblox YouTube channel

The Register · 1 hour ago

A nine-year-old YouTuber known as "Mighty Mike Plays" ran up a $118,000 (roughly £93,000) bill on his father's company credit card after repeatedly launching Google ad campaigns to promote his Roblox and Minecraft videos. The father, Dave, who works in marketing at an unnamed large company, discovered the spending only after being called into a meeting with his manager and the finance department, who presented him with three weeks of advertising charges. Dave says the incident could now cost him his job, as the matter has been escalated within the company and he may have to personally repay some or all of the money.

Dave explained that he had originally stored his corporate card details in his son's account to buy Robux, not realising this left the card permanently accessible. He later helped Mike set up a $20 Google ad campaign to boost his channel's viewership, but Mike kept launching new campaigns once each one's budget ran out, since the card was approved automatically every time. Dave estimates his son would need to earn around $13,000 a year until he turns 18 to pay the money back, and has urged other parents not to link company cards to accounts accessible by their children.

  • Boy, 9, spent $118,000 on Google ads via dad's work credit card.
  • Father discovered the charges during a meeting with his employer's finance team.
  • Dad may lose his job or have to repay the money himself.
