Pokémon Apps Are Coming Back Online After Extended Cybersecurity Outage
Pokémon HOME, Sleep and Champions went offline after a cybersecurity alert involving vulnerabilities in PHP, a programming language used by many websites. The Pokémon Company has now restored the apps, although the extended disruption showed how a flaw in widely used software can affect several services at once.
Champions returned at about 3am BST, HOME followed a few hours later, and Sleep ended maintenance around 10am BST. The vulnerabilities reportedly affected PHP versions dating back to 2004 and could allow attackers to alter site commands and run code remotely; an estimated 70% of websites use PHP.
In short
- Three Pokémon apps went offline during a PHP security response.
- Champions, HOME and Sleep have returned.
- The vulnerabilities could affect widely used websites.
