Progressive Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate race to become first Muslim US senator
Developing story first seen 9 hours ago
Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s closely watched US Senate race, defeating Republican Mike Rogers and becoming the first Muslim senator. The result adds to the Democrats’ newly secured Senate majority and shows that a progressive candidate could win in a swing state.
El-Sayed, 42, is a doctor and former Wayne County health director who defeated Democratic establishment favourite Haley Stevens in the primary. He campaigned for universal healthcare and an end to US military aid for Israel, while Donald Trump and Republican allies made Islamophobic attacks against him. Pro-Israel group Aipac spent about $30m trying to stop him in the primary, and advertising by both parties in the general election exceeded $220m by mid-October.
