An inquest concluded that 11-year-old Jaiden Shehata was accidentally killed by a train while crossing Bourneview level crossing near Kenley, south London, on his way to school. The jury found he probably failed to notice the approaching train because he was distracted by his mobile phone, while also criticising the crossing’s lack of active visual and audible warnings.

Jaiden was struck at 8.03am on 23 January last year and died from severe neck injuries. CCTV showed him holding a glowing object, and the inquest heard he may have been watching an eight-second WhatsApp video; he was not wearing headphones. The crossing was classified by Network Rail as high risk, and the coroner said she would prepare a report aimed at preventing similar deaths.
