A 16-year-old schoolgirl died after falling through the roof of an abandoned condominium building in Florida while trespassing there with friends, highlighting the dangers posed by derelict structures. Roylynn Scott fell around 29 feet through a hole in the roof of the four-storey building on 8 August, according to the Indian River County Sheriff's Office, which said the group had been on the roof at the time. She was airlifted to hospital but later died of her injuries, and investigators say all evidence points to an accident.

Scott's friends called 911 and one performed CPR while awaiting help, with dispatch audio capturing them pleading for her to wake up as she bled from her mouth and head. The building had "No Trespassing" signs and had been abandoned since at least 2007. Scott's grandmother, Carole Melasi, described her as a vibrant, popular Vero Beach High School student and is calling for abandoned buildings to be demolished, while acknowledging the group should not have been there. Her death, two days before the school year began, prompted the Indian River County School District to plan a moment of silence, and a GoFundMe for funeral costs has raised over $5,000.
