A Tennessee woman, Andrea Rene Cothran, 35, has been sentenced to life in prison for her role in the death of Fairway Police Officer Jonah Oswald, 29, who was shot while attempting to arrest her in Kansas in August 2023. Although Cothran did not fire the fatal shot herself, prosecutors successfully argued she bore legal responsibility because of her actions leading up to the killing, under a Kansas law that allows a first-degree murder conviction when someone dies during the commission of, or flight from, a dangerous felony.

Oswald, a father-of-two with four years' service, was pursuing Cothran and a second suspect, Shannon Marshall, after a stolen car report; the chase ended when the pair crashed and fled into a QuikTrip convenience store in Mission, Kansas, where Cothran was found hiding in the women's toilets. Marshall shot Oswald as officers tried to make the arrest, and Oswald died the next day, while Marshall was fatally shot at the scene. Cothran was convicted in May of felony murder, battery of a law enforcement officer, fleeing police, theft and reckless driving, and must serve at least 25 years before becoming eligible for parole; the judge told her she had "plenty of opportunities to stop" beforehand.
