Sheffield Labour ends local power sharing arrangement with Greens – Jewish News
Developing story first seen 3 hours ago
Sheffield Labour will end its power-sharing arrangement with the Green Party and propose a minority administration at a full council meeting on Wednesday. Labour says trust broke down after local Greens did not publicly reject their party’s “Zionism is Racism” conference motion, a dispute the party says has raised concerns among Jewish residents.
The two parties had governed Sheffield together since May’s local elections. Labour leader Fran Belbin said efforts to resolve the disagreement had run their course; Green group leader Angela Argenzio said Labour would be responsible for any consequences of destabilising the council. The dispute follows a 15 October ultimatum from Labour chair Bridget Phillipson, backed by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, that joint administrations should end unless Green councillors rejected the motion.
