South Carolina elects Democratic senator for first time in almost three decades
Democrat Annie Andrews is projected to have won South Carolina’s Senate race, ending a 28-year run without a Democratic victory in the state. Her win would be a striking upset in a state Donald Trump carried by 18 percentage points in 2024, and follows the death of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
Darline Graham, Lindsey Graham’s sister, was appointed to fill his seat in July with Trump’s support, then lost the race. A political newcomer, she acknowledged limited experience in national security during her primary campaign. Andrews is a former paediatrician; the projection was reported by CBS, the BBC’s US partner.
