Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has resigned after the centre-left opposition narrowly won the general election, securing 176 of the parliament’s 349 seats. The result gives opposition leader Magdalena Andersson an opportunity to return as prime minister, but forming a stable government may prove difficult because of divisions among left-leaning parties.

The opposition’s small majority was confirmed after late and overseas ballots were counted. Andersson’s Social Democrats remained the largest single party with 99 seats, while the Sweden Democrats fell to third place with 62, losing 11 seats. Sweden’s broad support for Ukraine and NATO membership is expected to remain unchanged, and parliament could vote on a new prime minister from 29 September at the earliest.
