A former Arizona PE teacher was dismissed after allowing a bullied male cheerleader to use a bathroom attached to her office, rather than the boys’ locker room. The decision followed death threats and serious mental-health difficulties linked to the student’s sexual orientation, while a parent mistakenly believed he had entered the girls’ locker room.
Plaza was placed on leave in February 2025 and dismissed in April after the complaint and allegations that she contacted students on Instagram despite being ordered not to. A settlement censured her for unprofessional conduct and required professional development before her teaching credentials could be restored; she said she did not regret protecting the student.
