Stylophone revives its credit-card-sized Mini synthesiser in three colours

Engadget ·

Stylophone has relaunched its Mini synthesiser, a credit-card-sized version of its instrument that first appeared in 2010. Priced at $30 and small enough to attach to a keychain, it brings the distinctive sound of a long-running instrument to a portable format.

The Mini has the same number of keys as the larger Stylophone and includes a playing stylus and built-in speakers. It is available now in three colours, including new pink, with few changes to its simple design. The original Stylophone dates back to the 1960s and has been used by artists including David Bowie, Kraftwerk, Blondie, Pulp and The White Stripes.

The Stylophone is an electronic musical instrument that originated in the 1960s and produces distinctive sounds when you use a stylus to touch its metal keyboard. Its characteristic electronic tone is quite different from conventional synthesisers and keyboards of the era.

The instrument has appeared in recordings by influential artists including David Bowie, Kraftwerk, Blondie, Pulp and The White Stripes, particularly in rock and electronic music. This association with major musicians has established it as a recognised part of popular music history.

Since its creation, the Stylophone has been produced in various formats, including compact pocket-sized versions designed to be portable and accessible to broader audiences. These miniaturised designs retain the core characteristics that made the original distinctive.
