What Senate races are left to be decided
Two Senate races remain undecided as votes are counted in Alaska and Mississippi, where Democratic challengers are narrowly ahead. Their outcomes could affect the Senate balance after Democrats won control of both chambers in the 2026 midterms.
In Mississippi, prosecutor Scott Colom leads Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith by 43 votes, with both at 48.9%; a win would make him the state’s first Black senator since Reconstruction. In Alaska, Mary Peltola leads Republican Dan Sullivan by 626 votes, with about 74% counted. The state’s ranked-choice system may require another count if no candidate tops 50%, while allegations involving a second candidate named Daniel J. Sullivan are under federal investigation.
In short
- Two Senate contests remain too close to call.
- Colom leads Hyde-Smith by 43 votes in Mississippi.
- Alaska may require ranked-choice tabulation.
