A family gathering in Billings, Montana, ended in a fatal shooting and house fire in which eight people, including the suspected gunman, died. The victims reportedly included Megan Ghekiere, her four children, her parents and her 92-year-old grandmother; the case has drawn attention because relatives say there had been concerns about the alleged shooter’s behaviour.

Police said four children and four adults, including the shooter, were killed after gunfire broke out shortly after 6pm at the family’s five-bedroom home. Reports say Alan Smith, 44, lived with his parents and may recently have been asked to move out, but police have not named the family publicly, confirmed a motive, or commented on that claim; the home was destroyed by the subsequent fire.
