‘Yaga’ Review: Carrie-Anne Moss and Hudson Williams in AMC+’s Intriguing but Undercooked Brew of Modern Crime and Ancient Folklore

The Hollywood Reporter ·

A young man vanishes from his family’s mansion on a Canadian island, prompting a local detective and a private investigator to search for him. AMC+ and Crave’s crime thriller, adapted by Kat Sandler from her play, draws on the Baba Yaga legend to explore wealth, male entitlement and female anger.

The review praises the show’s chilly atmosphere, playful and eerie tone, and performances from Carrie-Anne Moss, Hudson Williams and Clark Backo. Its seven roughly half-hour episodes move briskly through strange clues and folklore, but the story’s uneven execution leaves the series intriguing and bingeable rather than fully satisfying.

  • A missing heir’s case leads into a modern retelling of Baba Yaga.
  • The series blends crime, folklore, eerie clues and dark humour.
  • Strong atmosphere and cast cannot quite overcome uneven execution.
