Zverev seals world number one spot after win

BBC Sport ·

Alexander Zverev beat Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 7-5 in Vienna to secure the ATP world number one ranking from Monday. The 29-year-old had already guaranteed he would finish 2026 at the top, but the win means he reaches the summit at the earliest opportunity and becomes the first man outside Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz to lead the rankings since June 2024.

Zverev is the 30th man to top the ATP rankings and the second German after Boris Becker. He has won two Grand Slam titles and 64 of 80 matches this year, though both major victories came without facing Sinner or Alcaraz; Zverev said he might not be the best if both rivals were fully fit and playing at their peak. He will next face Britain’s Arthur Fery, who beat Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, while Cameron Norrie lost to Daniil Medvedev despite having a match point.

In short

  • Zverev will become ATP world number one on Monday.
  • He has won two Grand Slam titles and 64 matches this year.
  • Arthur Fery reached the Vienna quarter-finals; Norrie was eliminated.

Explained simply

The ATP rankings list men’s players by their results in tournaments over a rolling period, with points earned for wins and for going deep in events. Reaching number one means a player has more ranking points than anyone else at that time; it is separate from winning a particular tournament.

Alexander Zverev is a German player who has won two Grand Slam titles, the sport’s four biggest annual tournaments. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have been his main rivals near the top of the rankings, and Zverev has acknowledged that their form and fitness affect how the competition is judged.

The number one ranking is a measure of sustained results across the tour, rather than a direct comparison based on a single match. Zverev’s position is notable in Germany because Boris Becker was the only German man to reach the top before him.
