The Killer Tomatoes series began with a 1978 comedy horror film about tomatoes that turn against people. Its deliberately absurd mix of monster-movie scares and comedy made it a cult series, with several films following the original.
The new film is the fifth in the series and centres on a biotech prodigy whose experiment with engineered vegetables goes wrong. John Astin returns as Professor Gangreen, a character from earlier films; David Koechner, Eric Roberts and Catherine Corcoran are also among the cast.
The story draws on public interest in biotechnology and questions about how changing plants might affect people and the environment, while treating the subject as comedy. Its release is also the first announced project under a distribution partnership between Starboard Entertainment and Stonecutter Media.
