Arc browser will close on 22 December as company focuses on Dia

Engadget ·

The Browser Company will shut down its Arc browser on December 22 as it shifts its focus to Dia, its AI-based browser. Arc users will lose access to their accounts on that date, and the company is encouraging them to move to Dia.

The company says bookmarks, extensions, passwords and browsing history will transfer automatically. Dia includes a chatbot that can use context from multiple open tabs, summarise emails and YouTube videos, and create a daily brief using calendar, inbox and web-link data; its AI features are optional.

In short

  • Arc will shut down on December 22.
  • Users will lose access to Arc accounts.
  • The Browser Company is steering users towards Dia.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

The company can argue that concentrating its resources on Dia will let it improve and support one browser rather than divide effort between two products. It presents Dia’s AI tools as optional and says key Arc data will transfer, offering users a route to new features while preserving much of their existing setup.

The case against

Arc users can argue that closing a browser they rely on, and ending account access on a fixed date, imposes disruption even if some data transfers. They may also question whether Dia is a suitable replacement, particularly if they prefer Arc’s experience or have concerns about AI features and how data connected to them is used.
