Fashion’s Musical Chairs: Is Pierpaolo Piccioli Already Out at Balenciaga?

The Hollywood Reporter · 56 minutes ago

Pierpaolo Piccioli, creative director of Balenciaga, is reportedly expected to leave the Kering-owned house following his spring/summer 2027 show in Paris on 1 October, less than a year after his appointment. His potential departure reflects a broader crisis in luxury fashion, where celebrated designers are increasingly cycling through major brands within seasons rather than years, as conglomerates struggle with soft sales and seek rapid solutions to commercial underperformance.

Piccioli, who spent 16 years at Valentino before joining Balenciaga in 2024, replaced designer Demna and repositioned the brand from its dark, post-punk aesthetic back towards elegance and femininity associated with Cristóbal Balenciaga's heritage. The pressure is not unique to Balenciaga: Alessandro Michele departed Gucci after sales weakened, Valentino has faced commercial challenges under Michele, and Anthony Vaccarello is rumoured to be leaving Saint Laurent after a decade. Kering, which owns Gucci, Balenciaga and Saint Laurent, faces particular scrutiny as it attempts to revitalise its portfolio of major brands.

  • Designer Piccioli expected to leave Balenciaga after one year in role.
  • Luxury fashion experiencing rapid turnover of creative directors amid industry sales slump.
  • Kering cycling through celebrated designers as its major brands struggle commercially.
