The 10 Best Tomb Raider Levels of All Time
Polygon has compiled a list of the ten best levels in the Tomb Raider franchise, timed to coincide with new footage of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, which reimagines the classic level St. Francis' Folly with a rebuilt Sword of Damocles room turned into a traversal puzzle rather than an instant-death trap. The piece argues that despite three decades of graphical and technical evolution, the core structure of a Tomb Raider level has stayed consistent: a puzzle, something to shoot, an escape against a closing wall or draining air supply, and at least one troublesome jump.
Among the levels highlighted are St. Francis' Folly from the original Tomb Raider, a six-storey shrine with four godly-named doors each hiding a different deadly trap; the opening level of Tomb Raider 2, which throws players straight into danger with two Tyrannosaurus Rexes and no tutorial; the Venice level from Tomb Raider 2, featuring a speedboat rampage through gondolas followed by an atmospheric mansion heist; and an Area 51-inspired level from Tomb Raider 3 involving alien conspiracy theories, laser tripwires and a UFO interior.
