The family of actor Robert Carradine has filed a lawsuit against the regents of the University of California, alleging negligence by a UCLA psychiatric facility contributed to his death. The suit, filed on 7 August in Los Angeles County court, claims the facility broke standard procedures by leaving Carradine, who had active suicidal thoughts and a history of attempts, with items including a belt and a rolling bedside table in a locked unit, and failed to conduct required 15-minute checks. The family alleges these failures amount to wrongful death, elder abuse and neglect.

According to the complaint, Carradine attempted suicide roughly 19 hours after being admitted, which left him without oxygen and unable to recover despite five weeks in intensive care. He died in February at the age of 71; his brother Keith Carradine has said he had struggled with bipolar disorder for two decades. Robert Carradine, part of the Carradine acting family, was best known for Revenge of the Nerds, Lizzie McGuire and The Long Riders.
