Christopher Cross wrote "Think Of Laura" as a personal tribute to Laura Carter, a young woman who was killed as an innocent bystander during a gang shootout, after her death touched his then-girlfriend, Carter's best friend. He initially placed the song as an album track on his 1983 record Another Page, apparently not viewing it as single material given its deeply personal subject matter.

That changed when producers of the soap opera General Hospital used the track as emotional shorthand for the storyline of supercouple Luke and Laura, after Laura's character went missing. Cross's record label capitalised on the exposure by releasing it as a single, and it reached number nine on the pop charts, becoming his last Top 40 hit as musical tastes shifted away from his pop-rock style.
